Industry Day 2025

Traditionally a closed gathering of large international defense companies, this year we made a conscious decision to open the doors to a wider audience — from startups and scale-ups to dual-use innovators and players in the space sector. The result? An inspiring day with over 180 international representatives from industry and NATO armed forces, united around one common goal: accelerating innovation where it matters most.

Visitors had the opportunity to explore the unique ecosystem of Unmanned Valley, where technological innovation and operational application come together. The test facilities served as the stage for live demonstrations of drones and other unmanned systems, while inside, workshops, panels, and a vibrant information market sparked lively discussions.

Two keynote speakers took center stage during the plenary program, each highlighting the importance of innovation in the security domain from their own perspective:

  • Prof. Dr. Ir. Bas Rietjens, a military intelligence expert, spoke about the need for intelligence services to continuously adapt — not only technologically, but also strategically and culturally:
“Dare to fail, learn from mistakes, and break through the closed cultures that avoid risks and cling to secrecy.”

  • Michelle Jagtenberg from the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) presented the Quick Response Drone Facility (QRDF) — an initiative that delivers deployable drone capabilities within 4 to 6 weeks. In close collaboration with Dutch industry and academia, QRDF rapidly addresses urgent military and security needs.

In addition to the content-rich program, there was plenty of attention for technological demonstrations:
The High Eye Airboxer drew much attention as it flew over the UMV campus.
Guard From Above, known for training birds of prey to intercept drones, presented their latest innovation: the Evolution Eagle. This fixed-wing drone is designed for discreet surveillance and mimics the form of a real eagle, making it ideal for covert operations.
Visitors also had the opportunity to experience what it’s like to pilot an FPV (First Person View) drone, thanks to a hands-on demo by Walter Kort.

We look back on a successful day filled with connection, inspiration, and progress.
Thank you to all speakers, participants, demonstrators, and organizers who contributed to the success of this edition of Industry Day.
The urgency is clear, and the solutions are within reach — if we continue to collaborate, to learn, and to dare to innovate.
