Milestones

Unmanned Valley is an initiative of Delft University of Technology and the municipality of Katwijk and has been made possible by contributions from the Dutch Central Government Real Estate Agency, the Province of Zuid-Holland, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Change and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
In the long term Unmanned Valley should grow into a seedbed for high-tech activity. Below is an overview of the milestones in the development of Unmanned Valley.

The construction of Valkenburg airfield is started

1939

The Royal Dutch Navy takes the airfield into use as “Marinevliegkamp Valkenburg”

1947

After the disposal of the P-3C Orion, the naval airbase loses its operational status and closes its doors

2006

Delft University of Technology and the municipality of Katwijk establish Unmanned Valley Foundation

The creation comes from an initiative presented in 2016. More info.

2018

Airport regulation for Unmanned Valley creates space for flying

The control allows a test area to be used continuously and flexibly. More info.

2018

EU and Dutch government invest in Unmanned Valley

The subsidy is a major stimulus for the development of Unmanned Valley. More info.

2019

EU and Dutch government give green light for Unmanned Valley

The agreement gives the final go-ahead to become the hotspot for sensor-based activity. More info.

2019

First companies move to Unmanned Valley

With the arrival of the first companies, the first phase of “Building 356” has been very successfully developed and Unmanned Valley really comes to life. More info.

Unmanned Valley takes step in facilitating BVLOS test flights

Start of research into the precise route of a BVLOS corridor to the sea and the preconditions within which BVLOS flights can be carried out. More info.

MBO College Airport moves drone activities to Unmanned Valley

MBO College Airport expressly seeks cross-pollination and interaction with the professional field. More information.

More space, new maker space and better test facilities for companies in Unmanned Valley

Unmanned Valley has the wind in its sails. There is a clear need for centrally located customised housing and good (test) facilities. More info.

Unmanned Valley and nature conservationists are investigating the opportunities of using drones and other sensors to carry out research in dune areas
